Barges launch the show from the lower Hudson and East Rivers near the Brooklyn Bridge, which means two of Lower Manhattan’s busiest crossings and several major roadways shut down for the day — not just the hour of the show.

What Closes, and When
The Brooklyn Bridge closes to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting at 8:00 AM on July 4th and doesn’t reopen until 4:00 AM the next morning — a full 20-hour closure, not just an evening one. FDR Drive and the West Side Highway both shut down in the afternoon, typically from around 2 or 3 PM through midnight, to clear the viewing corridors along the rivers.
At street level, the NYPD closes Grand Street, Catherine Street, South Street, and East Broadway at their discretion throughout the day, along with the stretch of FDR Drive between the Brooklyn Battery Underpass and Delancey Street. If your route runs anywhere through the Lower East Side, the Seaport, or DUMBO on the Fourth, assume it’s affected.
Where People Actually Watch
Public, non-ticketed viewing runs along FDR Drive in Manhattan, with ticketed areas at Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Seaport for those who want a reserved spot. On the accessibility side, ADA viewing is set up at NYC Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza, with access points at Water Street and Coenties Slip, and at Pier 35 via Cherry Street and Rutgers Slip. Across the river, Jersey City offers a clear, less crowded view from Exchange Place and the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway.
Fireworks typically start around 8 PM, but the crowds and closures build for hours before that — arriving late doesn’t just mean a worse view, it can mean not reaching your viewing spot at all.
How to Actually Get There
Plan your route around the bridge closure, not through it. With the Brooklyn Bridge closed for the entire day, any route that normally crosses it needs a real alternate — the Manhattan Bridge or Williamsburg Bridge, depending on where you’re headed, and both get considerably busier as a result.
Build in extra time before 2 PM, not just before 8 PM. Most people plan around the fireworks start time and get caught off guard by roadway closures that begin hours earlier. If FDR Drive or the West Side Highway is part of your normal route, that closure starts affecting traffic well before the show does.
A pickup scheduled well after the show ends is worth the wait. Trying to leave the moment the fireworks end puts you in the middle of the single largest crowd surge of the night. A chauffeur who times pickup for 20-30 minutes after the finale, once the initial crush clears, gets you moving faster than fighting the exit crowd.
